Fairy cake is a small delicate cake (similar to a cupcake) found in England. In Douglas Adams’ Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Universe, he uses fairy cake as the core workings of the ‘infinite perspective vortex’. Using quantum theory, the entire universe is extrapolated from the way the atoms shift in the fairy cake, treating the end user (read ‘victim’) to a view of the entire universe and their place in it. The result is existential madness. James and Seth use it as a shorthand to mean: “The central concept from which everything else is extrapolated.” In other words, the most important and meaningful thing you wish to communicate with your world. We then, much like the infinite perspective vortex build upon that foundation to craft a world.
